Living Typography

2023 TDC Awards -Lettering

Collaborator: Hye Yeon Nam, Brendan Harmon, Ka Hei Cheng

Living Typography is an interactive installation that invites participants to engage with a robotically planted interface where soil and vegetation double as a tactile sensor network. Touching different zones of the living surface triggers environmental sound samples, creating an intuitive musical dialogue between human and nature – extracted from News from College of Art + Design in Louisiana State University.

As part of the collaborative team with Louisiana State University professor, Hye Yeon Nam and Brendan Harmon, I contributed by designing and programming of the capacitive sensor interface in Max and Arduino for the plants, conducted field recordings to extract the audio sources based at local Baton Rouge, Louisiana, applying sonification of capacitive sensing data, and building of audio system for the sensor. The project was recognized with a Type Directors Club (TDC) Award, celebrating its fusion of typographic form, organic material, and sound-based interaction.
