Sonification

Resonance

Touch emerged from the silence left in the wake of the pandemic—a time when fear fractured our sense of closeness and reminded us of how fragile, and essential, human connection truly is. As the world slowly found its way back to shared spaces, we were faced with quiet questions: Do you still remember how life felt before? What kind of life are we reaching toward now?

This interactive performance invites audiences to step in, not as spectators, but as collaborators. Whether among friends or strangers, participants are welcomed to improvise together, to rediscover the joy of shared sound, and to reconnect through the simple, powerful act of music-making.

The piece was recorded at the Digital Media Center Theater at Louisiana State University, a venue outfitted with a 71-channel Meyer surround sound system. Touch utilizes twelve capacitive sensors, each mapped to a stereo audio source, creating a 24-channel immersive experience. Live event programming in Max routes and spatializes the sounds, with Open Sound Control (OSC) data guiding the movement of audio across the space—sounds weaving around the room in real time.

At the heart of the installation is an acrylic interface embedded with conductive tape, tracing hidden words formed through typography. These are not just decorations, but quiet invitations. Can you see what the words say? And perhaps more importantly. what do they say to you?
